Any areas better than others for winter sun ? Empty Any areas better than others for winter sun ?

Post by Hayzer on Sun 11 Oct 2015 - 10:33

We have visited Tenerife in winter on many occasions usually January or February. We have always stayed in the area from Los Christianos to Coata Adeje and have always had pretty good weather with not more than the odd half day or full of cloudy weather. Are there any areas in the south which get more sun due to shelter from the mountains. or is it all just much of a muchness with little to choose between areas in the south. How far inland can you go and still not be effected by cloud ?.

If you go on google maps and see where most of the banana plantations are, they're the places with the most sun...

On Tripadvisor, Los Gigantes/Puerto Santiago area is generally mooted as the place with the greatest amount of sunshine in the area. I can't imagine it being hugely different though from the Adeje/Americas areas. It does get windier though as you go further south ( i.e from Costa Silencio ) and up as far a Poris  de Abona on the east side. Thats a good tip from Cam re: banana plantaions. There are loads of them as you drive from Adeje to P.Santiago and on up into Tamaimo. The north gets a bit more cloud and rain. There was a "debate" on TA a few weeks ago about this and the fans of both areas got quite entrenched in their opinions! Any areas better than others for winter sun ? 3025408739

LasAmericas is generally the warmest and sunniest as far as I have seen and I travel about a bit. Adeje is  cloudy at some part of the day in the winter. los Gigantes is sunny but generally not as warm as the Los Cris to fanabe stretch.

We used to stay for 6_8 weeks every January in G.D.S. but noticed over the last few years it was getting colder and more windy every year and out of a crowd of 18 not one now goes there in Winter, we used to stand at our door in the cold and cloudy weather and look across at Los Cristianos and the sun would be blazing down , for the last two years we have stayed in the Bitacora as we always need a wee rest, and the weather has been very good

I like Los Cristianos. Not as noisy as PDLA, caters more for my age group and plenty shops/restaurants and bars. Beaches are blue flag, if you like lying about and small enough to get from one end to the other in about 10-15 minutes. Any areas better than others for winter sun ? 294053457

PS: And, of course there's the harbour where boat and fishing trips can be arranged or even get on the ferries to visit other islands...

I like the fact it can't really get much bigger, (apart from the road layouts built 20 years ago to the north and never used since!), as it's jammed in with Montana Guaza on the east, PDLA on the west and the TF1 on the north. Perfect size and self contained. Even if the tourist industry collapsed, Los Cris would still be there. Lots of locals live there. Granted, lots of places would close down but the locals wouldn't miss them, they do their own thing anyway and have their own favourite eateries and bars. We will be staying in Puerto Santiago next year for the third time in 5 years. It is, in my opinion, much livelier than Los Gig ( which has the better restaurants by and large. ). It is especially popular with families with young kids ( during the summer, don't know what its like during winter). We didn't come across ANY closed restaurants etc.

GOLF DE SUR is TO CLOSE TO THE AIRPORT ,you can not only read the reg of the plane, but the shoe sizes of the passengers . it is badly laid out si its a long drive to get round it and there are nothing much there ... it could be used for the new film ´´28 dias manana´ its so quiet ..

I agree with both of these statements although I also like the area around the Safari Centre which IMO is rather upmarket, even moreso now they are slowly completing the work along the 'Golden Mile'  - but soon that really will be tourists only as they have removed all the carparking slots along the road.

I have to say, we didn't notice many/any shops closed in P. Santiago. Can't remember about Los Gig but we only used to go there for dinner and then back to P. Santiago afterwards. I'm going to do a building by building inspection next summer and do a photo slideshow!! I like Anaga a lot, but also I like the Masca ambience. Better off getting boat to Masca and walking up, better for you and then stop at a nice little cafe.
