    Orange roaming Empty Orange roaming

Post by Joel David on Thu 24 Jul 2014 - 11:14

Be very aware if you intend to travel to Tenerife/Spain if your mobile is on ORANGE or EE.  I always switch off my 'Data-Roaming' and only use 'Wi-Fi' to collect my mail or use the net whenever I am out of the U.K.  recently I have noticed that I had been charged extortionate data roaming costs on my last 4 bills. I checked with Orange and they said I must have switched on my 'data' at some point and therefore must accept the charges. Last week from the moment I arrived in TFS I began receiving the usual texts from Orange/EE informing me of E.U charges whilst roaming, I already knew the charges and paid no heed to the texts (2 in the first hour), what I was quite concerned about was I received 5 emails directly following the texts. I know I switched of my data-roaming just before boarding at Manchester so I did not expect any mails till I was in a Wi-Fi spot so I checked my data-roaming 'switch' and saw that it was ON, I then checked my usage and the 5 mails had racked up 10 megabites costing about 2quid. I turned off my data-roaming again, later in the day I got another of the texts from Orange/EE with same information on roaming charges, following that text I received 4 further emails.... I checked my data-roaming again and again it was now ON. I checked my data usage again and I had now used 16 megbites, what I did not realise is that once activated your data updates FACEBOOK and TWITTER both of which use oodles of data.  I had now realised that with your data roaming switched OFF the texts from Orange/EE activated and switched ON my data roaming.  I contacted Orange and after the usual three quarters of an hour listening to "press 1 for this and 2 for that" accompanied by infuriatingly crap music, I eventually spoke to someone in outer Mongolia and explained the situation. I was told I would not receive anymore texts and that Orange would re-emburse the £26-00 I had in one day accumulated in data charges, however after 4 hours yet another text arrived with the same message and yet again it activated my data roaming. Having already informed Orange/EE I gave up bothering about it and received 3 texts per day racking up a total of 143 megabites in the week, it now costs 20p per meg but 8 weeks ago it was 50p per meg. The sinister aspect of this is that most phone companies have been forced to lower their charges so is this a deliberate scam to recoupe the outrageous profits they once enjoyed (and still do) before the E.U. watchdog stepped in??.
