    UK WEATHER WARNING,

Post by Topdog on Sat 26 Oct 2013 - 13:37

Even started showing the last bad storm in 1987. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Where were you and did you get hit hard in 1987.
I was in Hove. I worked in London as a Restaurant manager and I got the 1am ish train from London to Brighton. I walked up the hill thinking the atmosphere feels very strange, warm and yet cold, windy with no gusts, also very still. I got to my flat which was ground floor and I was in about 30mins before the banging and crashing started. When I looked out at daylight there was a tree leaning against our building and an upturned car on my neighbours top patio.
The real extent of damage came when I went for a walk, Brighton was very badly hit. I went by car to work 2 days after as trains still not running and went past a couple of the large parks, these were just masses of fallen trees and debris. I had a friend with a chainsaw who made an absolute mint in the days after.
A guy that worked for me lived in a high rise in Battersea and he said he watched London switch off bit by bit, until complete darkness all bar emergency lighting.
A street named Elmgrove in Brighton was nicknamed "Elm Grave"

I lived in a thatched cottage in Essex. Slept through it but in the morning when I came down stairs the front door was wide open and there was a rose bush in the dining room  .
I was a driving instructor at the time and it took me ages to get to pick this kid up for his driving test but we made it to Bishops Stortford test centre just in time. Of course the woosie government paid examiners cancelled the tests didnt they, scared of a few fallen trees. Kent got it worst, forests flattened like it was a nuclear bomb.

I lived on the London Road in Camberley and I worked for Sun Microsystem which was just down the road so I walked.  I was the only one on our floor until lunchtime because everyone else lived miles away.  We had no damage at home except 1 fence panel down, although at the top of the road there was a huge tree down.  I looked on Flickr for a picture of the area at that time and bloody hell this one was taken by a guy called Paul Appleyard who I used to work with at Sun.  What a shock!!!

Do you know I often wondered if peeps got better having passed their test but looking at the standard of most peoples driving I always suspected not. In your case my suspicions have been completely confirmed.

Just rang son in law suggesting he puts an additional line to the buoy on his swinging mooring in Wells harbour but seems he cant be bothered. Nobody knows yet where these winds will hit and it could yet track south into France and not bother us too much. At the moment looks like the English Channel is going to get the worst of it. We shall see, maybe the Met Office crying wolf........

    No prayer smiley then......

If that breaks free from its moorings I will give it a 1% chance of not being battered to bits.
About the same chance as me praying.

Well, dunno where that hurricane went. No power cuts here (and we get plenty), no trees down and no tiles off my dodgy looking roof. Nearest weather station (Marham) recorded strongest gust at 46mph. Only a smallish lake in yard now gone. Pfft.
