Our last day, Sunday. 60nm from Lowestoft to Wells-next-the Sea. Roy had somehow mislaid the chart for this section but there are no real obstacles apart from fishing pots and nets marked with little flags on buoys. The first photo is Great Yarmouth pleasure beach. Quite shallow here as the beach goes out flat for a long way at low tide. This was high tide and about 10am. Beach still fairly quiet.

Voyage from River Medway to Wells, Norfolk. Part 1. - Page 2 00611

Sea Palling, about half way. Easy to spot as there are rows of rock groins stretching along the coast as opposed to coming out from the beach to protect against erosion. Great pity they cant make a marina here as there is nowhere along this section of coast to pull in if there are problems or rough weather. A flat calm though as you can see. Beach with lots of peeps on soaking up the rays. We get buzzed by jet skis and hang-glider things with little engines on. We also saw what we thought was a dolphin about 100m away.

Voyage from River Medway to Wells, Norfolk. Part 1. - Page 2 00711

Last photo is Cromer and the pier with the lifeboat house on the end. By now visibility was down to about 1 mile with the sea haze and spooky flat calm. 12nm to go and as we go past Blakeney Point loads of seals come out to say hello, look just like dogs they do but forgot to take photos.

Thats it folks, only a cheap camera and it only holds 9 in its memory so I didnt go mad! Right, walk the dog and do some painting on yet more boats........

Thanks, when I initially started reading the Airport/Montgomery article my initial views were just blow the thing up, then I got to the last two section of the of the article and then though maybe not such a good idea, there is one statement in the article that confused me somewhat, “carry out a controlled explosion”, how the hell do you carry out a controlled explosion on something like that, surly once you light the fuse it all goes off with one hell of a big bang...
Think if I was in charge I'd bring in one of those sand blowing ships and cover it in sand as suggested then light the fuse at high tide, but then again what do I know...

Sure I saw a program once about ships being broke up for scrap by guys on a beach in Bangladesh. Bet there are some over here who could do the job. They would have to wear hard hats here though. Voyage from River Medway to Wells, Norfolk. Part 1. - Page 2 3025408739

Adventure, thats what it is. When it goes belly up, misadventure. Talking of belly up there was a programme about the Concordia last night. Live recordings of the Captain being told to return to his vessel as punters still on board and then ignoring it. Man should be stripped of all his possessions and imprisoned until hes dead. Even for an Italian he takes the biscuit. The man shouldnt have even been in charge of a pedalo.

If you can't be bothered reading it all, read from the section halfway down headed "Near Miss" to the end, the man always maintained the rocks were not on his chart, I recall reading at the time Lloyds acceping the rocks were not shown on their charts...
Strange statement at very end of article, basically saying its irrelevant as to whether the rocks were there or not as the ship capsized elsewhere !!!
And where is it said the captain has to go down with the ship, lets just say I'm the janitor of a very big building, it catches fire, am I going to sit in there until its evacuated, think not, the guy shouting on the radio telling him to get back on board was sitting in a nice office somewhere, wonder what his actions would have been if rolls were reversed...
That said the captain done himself no favours with his actions...

I imagine this ship would rely on electronic charts but there would have been old fashioned paper ones on board too. On my charts ALL known underwater obstacles are shown clearly. Even my boat has GPS so getting lost doesnt really come in to it. And it was only 500m offshore in good visibility. The only conclusion I can come up with is Captain was taking a short cut to save time.

What about second in command ? Also i would have thought you would have to overide all security measures to get into uncharted waters, Would it be possible to sail something as big as that onto rocks, Surley it takes more than 1 person to do something daft,
Also is what i dont understand if the ship was grounded why risk lives trying to get off the thing,
Stay put and wait for help, Yeh you may be sat on the ceiling but what the hell,
    More to this, :puzzled:

Reminds me of a metal detector story.....My son in law has yanks over for metal detector tours. Their history only goes back about 200 years and they just love Roman coins and the like. Anyway if they are not having much luck finding stuff sometimes he would 'plant' stuff in the field to keep them happy. One day one of his mates thought they would have a laugh so he planted a handful complete with a model Concorde......Voyage from River Medway to Wells, Norfolk. Part 1. - Page 2 2419626307
