Something similar happened to my mate when his Mother was put in a caring home.
The dog went missing and was found about eight miles away, after four days, outside the caring home my mates Mother was getting looked after, and the dog had never been near there...ever.
The vet who found the dog said he seemed to be contented to be lying around the gardens of the home, and when they tried to move him he became upset.
My mate eventually got him back home but he wasn't the same dog as he was always pining for the mother.
The dog died a couple of months later aged 16

My grandad had a Red Setter. The day he dies, the dog went into the coal shed and buried itself under the coal. He was found 2 days later. Strange innit.
