Things we believed as kids

Following on from LRs thread about tracking Santa and TD saying he believed made me think back to being a kid and some of the things we were told.

The Iron Curtain was a real curtain.

Turf accountants were where you bought lawns

The criminal underworld lived underground.

The dead goldfish were buried in the garden.

Winters were cold.

Slide rules were marvellous devices and wouldn't be bettered as calculation aids.

kissing girls would cause your teeth to fall out

Ghosts were afraid of electric light.

If you go out with wet hair you'll catch a cold.

If you pull a face and the wind changes, you'll stay like that.


What were you told and did you believe?

If you had small parents, you'd be small. (Feckin' right I believed!).

If one stood on a worm it would rain

If you picked dandelions then you'd pee the bed.

If you keep sit too close to the TV your eyes will go square.

If you keep playing with it, it will come off in your hand

If a buttercup reflects off the underside of your chin , you like butter.

If you sat indoors with a jacket on, you wouldn't feel the benefit when you went outside.

The girls were always made to play Indians.

If you cross your eyes you'll get struck like that!

Monsters lived under the bed, but they couldn't get you if you kept the covers over your head.

Dock leaves were a cure for nettle stings. (They were!)

If you handled a toad you'd get warts!

wow so many I had never heard before.

Swallowing pips would make a fruit tree grow in your stomach

Thunder was God moving furniture around, just as well he wasn't married to me or we would be deaf.

I told my nephew when he was only about 7 years old, that we paid extra to get blue water in the toilet cistern! (Should have seen his wee face when he flushed the pan! ).

When my girls were little we were parked up outside the fish and chip shop in Reading and opposite was a sex shop. When Jim came back to the car they asked him what it was - quick as a flash he said it's where Posh people go for their sex of coal.

I liked the diversionary "fish and chip shop" bit there Gypsy...what was Jim getting out the sex shop?

My mum told me that I would go blind if I didn,t stop my favourite passtime , so I said " can I keep doing it until I need glasses

Gee i believed in Fairies. monsters, anything really whaen i was really young.
