When we arrived he was already singing, he sang non-stop and was still going strong when we left more than 3 hours later. I originally thought the music might be a bit obtrusive while we were eating and trying to talk. Like my ‘rubbish’ comment above, I was wrong AGAIN!
Joel has a very smooth voice; it flows seemingly effortlessly like silk. He sang romantic songs, pop songs of our era and even some up to date songs so his appeal spanned the generations, as there were youngsters there too. As the evening wore on several of us turned the restaurant into a dance floor (well more clutch and shuffle in the case of some!). Joel took requests and sang a couple of my all time favourites ‘Midnight Train to Georgia’, and ‘Smile’. People opposite asked for music to slit your wrists by Mr Leonard Cohen but that was only one song out of possibly 70 or 80 that he played.
I was rather touched when he did a couple of Everly Brothers numbers as my brother-in-law was a good friend of theirs and he died recently. The strange thing is that whoever’s songs Joel covered be it Billy Joel, Neil Diamond, Dean Martin etc he sounded exactly like them. I got to the point where I was looking for the tape but no it was all the man himself.
To summarize, I think this rock chick is an easy listener at heart because she certainly knew every line of every song that was performed and thoroughly enjoyed herself. It is certainly Jim’s sort of music and it made a lovely birthday treat a special evening.
Thank you Joel we look forward to hearing you again.
