Clive the peacock to get some new pals.

Post by Campbell Brodie on Wed 2 May 2012 - 18:56

This story is close to me as it is about my home town, Dunfermline. We have a large 76 acre park which was gifted to the people of Dunfermline by the American billionaire Andrew Carnegie. Carnegie was born in Dunfermline and always remembered how he used to climb over the large walls surrounding the then private estate of Pittencrieff to see the beautifully manicured lawns and rare imported trees and shrubs with the secret, shady paths that meandered along the Tower burn.
Carnegie bought the estate in 1902 and gave it to the citizens of Dunfermline along with the resident muster of peacocks. These beautiful birds have always had the freedom of the city and used to regularly be seen walking up the High St and surrounding roads. Unfortunately, the peacocks numbers have been dwindling over the years and now, poor "Clive" is the only one left. His last two mates met their demise by one flying into a plate glass window and breaking it's neck and the other by being run over by a car.
But all is not lost, Dunfermline council are building a new Peacock sanctuary to breed and keep new peacocks which should keep old Clive happy. I am glad this is going ahead because on every visit to the "Glen" as Pittencrieff park is affectionately known by locals, since I was about 6 years old, there has always been peacocks walking about freely to delight the children of Dunfermline. Fantastic and "Lang may yer lum reek"!

The road at the top and the one that runs away at 90dg at the end is Woodhouse Garage where i worked as a lad, Opposite is the fairground that came twice a year, At lunch time we used to grab a couple of BSM cars and do a bit of Rallying, Great gaffer he was, Best liar i ever heard,

Reason I hinted at motorcycles in Pittencrieff park in earlier post, I recall being told that years ago motorcycle races were held there, have just looked the net, can’t find anything, so was it just a tale I had been told ?

Can recall me and my mate (who was big in to bikes even as a kid) once when over in Dunfermline visiting taking a walk through the park looking for the track, we would have been in our early teens at the time, I can recall at the time thinking the paths through the park were a bit tight for racing.

You guys were lucky then because they make a heck of a racket. I believe the house belongs to a Spanish horse trainer who also has stables on the side of the mountain somewhere behind Annafredo's house. There are some like Oneleg who actually call it the Peacock House.

Does a Spanish horse look different to a British horse?

Was not taking the mick when I originally replied, but due to age of photo thought “wee bike circuit” went back to 50/60s, but given MM age must have been there when I visited.
