    Pineapple. NTS for Scotland.

Post by Campbell Brodie on Mon 2 Apr 2012 - 16:37

I remember we had a thread about this somewhere but I can't find it, so I'll just stick it in here. I was near the "Pineapple" today so I decided to take a few piccies while I was in the area. It makes you think about the amount of money some people had when they could build this roof on top of what is basically a fancy gardener's shed!
Wonder what it would cost to build something like that now?

I was playing Estate Agent today, Showing a neighbour around a customers house thats up for sale, The stuff in the garden must have been worth a fortune, Fountains and sculptures, Stone furniture, No Pineapple though, Some lovely houses back in the old days, Nobody builds anything like that now, And they would pull them down if they could get away with it, Very wealthy people back then, I like the odd folly

Got to keep the old "knowledge database" up to scratch in case it goes quiet in the snug Gypsy. Then I can say; "What do you think about that pineapple then?" then the conversation starts to flow freely once more with a bit of a nudge from your's truly...

Here's a cracker then Reg. A "colliseum" built above the ferry town of Oban...McCaig's Folly

It was built as a memorial to McCaig's family name and also to provide work to unemployed stonemasons during the winter months...Story

Blimey, I love odd people, Them that do things just for the hell of it, Fred Dibnah and the likes, He wanted a mining shaft ? so he set to and built one, And why not ?, Not about money or anything, Just because you can, I'm all fired up now, Ive wanted a flag pole for a long time, I have a spare broom handle and a england flag, Tomorro it gets nailed to the garage roof, I can hear the music - In Englands green and pleasant land, I shall salute while i listen,

We used to enjoy going to Hawkstone it says on their website The Follies is a fantasyland built more than 200 years ago. It covers 100 acres. Intricate pathways, ravines, arches and bridges, the towering cliffs and follies, the hermit in his hermitage and King Arthur addressing his troops in the awesome caves combine to create a magical visit After years of neglect, the magical landscape was lovingly restored and reopened in 1993.

This is one of my favourites...the Minack Theatre near Porthcurno in Cornwall. It was built in the '30s by an old eccentric lady and her gardener so she and her friends would have somewhere to put on an outdoor version of Shakespeare's "The Tempest".

Click on the "View fullsize"...see the lady with the wee girl in pink going down the steps? Just above the woman is a plaque. It reads: "Rowena Cade created this theatre". Magnificent!
