I occasionally frequented a pub in Liverpool called the Slaughterhouse back in the 70s and 80s prior to going to the match, when tickets were widely available. They always has a huge pot of bacon ribs and cabbage on the go and I frequently indulged. Couldn't sleep so I'm having a glass of red watching Rick Stiens road to Mexico, food on it looks spicy and yum so after licking the tv screen for a bit it's kitchen raid...

One potato, in to microwave for about ten minutes turning every two, while potatoes getting zapped, couple of slices of cheese and the same of onion chopped up and mixed with hot paprika, garlic salt, and chilli flakes, potato done and sliced in half and scored to let topping mix flow in its back in to microwave for two minutes then a squirt of mayo and a grind of black pepper,,,,,,,, yum...

Thought to myself after demolishing it that was so tasty and must have cost about 25p to make, it's the spicy tastes we pay for in takeaways not the ingredients, and a pinch of those spices made it...

Had a look at a potato takeaway menu, almost £4 for a spud, cheese and a bit Branston Pickle...

Will be on the late night munchies menu again that one...

Not for tonight but a week or two's time pickled herring,,, ain't had it for years but for some reason it's came in to my mind recently but could not find herring to purchase anywhere, but today I'm in town and there's a big fish counter in the Arandale Centre and sure enough they had some, so two were purchased...

Story behind delicacy is when my dad was at the fishing they were fishing for white fish, cod, haddock etc but occasionally in the net they would pull up herring, shrimps, crab etc, something they were not fishing for, it would just be dumped back in the sea, but not on my dads boat... He would salvage the lot, in the ships stores things like tomato sauce, mayo, vinegar etc were purchased in bulk in sweetie shop size jars which along with the herbs etc he took to sea with him he made good use of using the contents and the empty jars, mega prawn cocktail, crabs were normally brought home alive, and the afore mentioned pickled herring...

Simples to make, today I used two herring, filleted and cut in to chunks, ordanary onion and a red onion cut chunky, a lemon sliced, three bay leafs, three cloves, teaspoon pepper corns, teaspoon mustard seeds and vinegar, mix in a jar and leave for at least a week, I turn jar every time I go in fridge but for couple of days before ready to eat I just leave it so sediment settles in bottom of jar...

Yum just to eat herring and onion as it is but on buttered toast fingers and put back under the grill for a bit double yum...

We ended up with beans on toast as my oven blew up on Friday night, had to buy a new one on Saturday and it won't be delivered until Tuesday.  So while we were there decided to replace the dishwasher as well as that died in sympathy.
