Wonder what they were drinking when they came up with this one...

What you can´t see is the Virgen del Carmen, a 600 kilo life size sculpture, submerged 40 metres down to bless the craft that pass overhead, but do look out for a scale copy of the shrine at the harbour edge.

It's in the section about Los Cris harbour...

I've seen the wee shrine. As they say, the big life size one is in the harbour to bless the boats as they sail out fishing...

This fiesta was on one time when I was out:-

    Los Cristianos
In most places the Virgen del Carmen had her annual sea trip a long time ago, in Los Cristianos it doesn’t happen until 8pm on the first Sunday in September (check dates each year). It’s a popular event in the southern resort with open air dances taking place over the weekend.

They take the statue out of the shrine and place it on to one of the local fishing boats, said fishing boat then very slowly makes its way out of the harbour followed by a flotilla made up of other fishing boats, privately owned boats and the tourist excursion boats, we were on one of them, the one that looks like a pirate ship, think it was called Peter Pan... All the boats come to a stop just outside the harbour congregating around the boat with the statue on it, preacher on said boat then starts spouting off some religious shit, whereas on our boat we're getting tore in to the beer, wine and food,,, preacher finished the lead boat slowly makes its way back in to the harbour again with the flotilla following it, now at this point a huge firework display starts, the fireworks are set off from two locations, the ferry terminal and the Arona Grand hotel aimed to meet in the centre of the harbour, exactly where our captain had come to a stop to let us watch the display,,, it was like being in feckin Beirut, all the debris from the fireworks was raining down on top of us, some in flames, the shafts of the rockets were the size of broom handles... We had got talking to a couple who lived/worked Tenerife, I say to the guy this is bloody dangerous and the captains absolutely pissed and ain't got a clue what's going on, this lad says I know him I'll go have a word with him, sure enough we head back out of the harbour and get back to enjoying the fireworks from a safe distance while we swallowed down the booze and food...

    All very religious it was...
