In a botched attempt to cut carbon levels, subsidies were greater than the cost of the fuels, meaning businesses could legitimately make money by burning more fuel...

My brother in law did some work for a mushroom producer in the north. The guy was heating 3 huge tunnel thingys using electricity siphoned off the main grid. He was caught but s'one tipped him off the day before and he managed to disconnect 2 of the tunnels before the inspection team came out . Now he has a meter on the remaining tunnel for 12 months so that the electricity board can figure out how much he owes in back charges over last 3 years. So then he had a problem heating the other 2 tunnels so he got a 100% grant to buy 2 big biomass boilers and applied under the above scheme for the fuel. He has the heating going 24/7 with doors open heating the tunnels and now his house . The money he is making from the fuel scheme is twice the electricity he is using on the tunnel that is being metered so he is , in fact, heating his mushroom tunnels and house for free

Election to become a defacto referendum on Brexit. Sinn Fein to be biggest party in the north. Both them and DUP to be returned but McGuinness won't work with Foster unless BIG concessions. Border poll will be called. Theresa May and rest of UK government will be conspicuously standing on the sidelines saying it's a matter for the people of N. Ireland while secretly hoping and praying that the poll will show preference for reunification of Ireland. Poll shows no change in opinions and Sinn Fein go into power with DUP, both with new leaders but for first time, a nationalist First Minister. Sinn Fein will then use every opportunity to balls up Brexit. Special deal will be cut for the north. Scotland totally pissed off with this. Sturgeon calls indy referendum. Then one of two things will happen. Commonwealth of Independent States with common tax, currency ( including Ireland North and South ) ( not likely imo ) or two  Reunified Ireland,Independent Scotland. Both new entities will want to join EU. Spain objects. They hold up all kinds of legislation. EU crumbles and Europe has to start from scratch all over again.

Naw, I haven't a clue, that's just my wish list above Though, sinn fein will have a long term target in mind of which this is only the first step. They don't do resignations unless there is something in it for them.

Don't know of one British person that wants to hold onto it. All you guys think we are all the one anyway. Don't think ye make any difference between Irish nationalists and Irish Unionists?? AND, the treasury won't publish how much the north is costing the British taxpayer but it is conservatively estimated at 10 billion pounds per year, possibly more! Just as well ye are all so rich over there

I think it'll be a while before reunification. Those loyalist lot can be just as extreme as the nationalists.

What's the split in the North Dermo? Are there more Billys than Tims or vice versa? I'm thinking MacGuinness thinks he/or whoever may get a majority in a new election.

Its all changed. There is now a demographic that describe themselves as Northern Irish, first generation chinese and the likes of McIlroy. It used to be you were either Unionist ( Loyalist) or Nationalist ( republican ). The peace up there has muddied the waters until Brexit came along. Now, loads of folk up there are applying for Irish passports ( S'one born there can either be Irish or British passport holders ( or both )). Applications from the UK , including the north are up 45%. I think it will be a bit like Scotland, until the referendum is put to them, they wont nail their colours to the mast until then. At the moment, there is very little between the combined Unionist or combined nationalist vote, but Arlene Foster's feck up with 400 million of taxpayers money being wasted will ( I think) cause the new voters to vote her out. Sinn Fein ( I think) see the opportunity, and they hope to lead the government up there for the first time. It was predicted to happen in the mid 2020's but I think they will get in now. Then, watch them become a fly in the ointment for Theresa May!

I'm reading a book called " A United Ireland, Why Unification Is Inevitable And How It Will Come About". Its written by Kevin Meagher, special assistant to Northern Ireland Secretary , Shaun Woodward. Basically he says that successive  British governments hoped that the situation up there would resolve itself and they though the island would have been reunified decades ago. It makes complete economic sense to unify, for all parties, Republic, the north and the UK. He also says that the UK would continue to support the north for a number of years after reunification, more or less so they can be shot of it. The only people that want the north to remain as part of the UK are the Unionists ( 50.5% to 49.5% majority). I can't understand this, why would you want to be part of a country that doesn't want you                                          "Britain has no selfish strategic, social or economic interest in Northern Ireland" ( Patrick Mayhew, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland in 1990)

Just as William the Conqueror beat Harold at Hastings and claimed England, we gave the Vikings a doing at Largs and claimed Shetland/Orkney and all them other wee islands all over the place...
